Madurai Textiles and Crafts Tour

Madurai is a centre of many traditional crafts. In this tour, we will visit the workshops of the craftsmen and learn about their work and way of life.

The tour covers the following crafts:-

• Stone sculpting – although this traditional craft practised by the Vishwakarma community has gone into decline, there are still around 3000 sculptors in the Madurai area, carving beautiful sculptures in various types of stones. Most are for religious use, and include representations of popular deities.
• Handloom weaving – we will visit Kaithari Nagar (Handloom Town), to see the process of spinning and weaving of the beautiful Madurai cotton and silk sarees
• Sungudi Sari Dyeing – the Sungudi saree is a form of knotted tie-and-dye which has been practised in Madurai since the 16th century
• Doll making – these dolls are made primarily for use during festivals, particularly the ‘Golu’ dolls bought by women for Navarathri celebrations

In addition to the above, those interested can also choose to visit a brick making unit to see handmade clay bricks.

INR 1700 per person for 7-10 persons
INR 2300 per person for 5-6 persons
INR 3000 per person for 3-4 persons
INR 4500 per person for 2 persons
INR 8000 for a solo traveler
